Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are actually "caps" covering the whole chewing surface of the teeth. They are the ideal solution compared with fillings for their longer lifetime. When you have some discoloration or damage to a tooth, your dentist can recommend dental crowns (or dental “caps”) as a possible solution. They are called “crowns” or “caps” since they are not only placed on the top a tooth, but they cover its whole surface, protecting it for a long time. The advantage of crowns, for example, over fillings is that a filling is placed inside the tooth to fill a cavity, whilst a crown covers the entire tooth starting at the line of the gum, in this way replacing the entire chewing (occlusal) surface of the tooth. Besides restoring the shape of the tooth, crowns also protect or strengthen weakened teeth.

They are usually made of gold (metal crown), porcelain (full porcelain crown), or a fusion of both (porcelain fused to metal).

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges can be simply defined as a row of dental crowns. When you have one or more teeth missing, an ideal long-term solution is a dental bridge. A bridge is a false tooth, which is fused between two porcelain crowns to bridge over the gap of the missing tooth. The two holding teeth (with crowns on them) will function as abutments.

A fixed bridge consists of a series of crowns, where crowns are fixed to the holding teeth at both ends of the row. Fixed bridges cannot be taken out for cleaning like removable dentures, as they are custom made and permanent.
